What makes you happy to be gay?

Sometimes just need to remind myself the blessings of living as a gay male in a heteronormative society...

Favored:

  • Solid friendships w/ straight friends who understand the meaning of authentic friendship;
  • As a gay male, you are by definition, not a neanderthal;
  • Being thought of as unique; you might be a little more compassionate person if you’re gay;
  • More disposable income;
  • We can handle more rejection than straight people, without becoming irate;
  • If we choose to have children, those kids are more desired and wanted, than say the unexpected/unplanned pregnancy burdens;
  • Straight men look so much older than their contemporaries who are gay;
  • You are, hands down, your nieces' and nephews' favorite uncle;
  • You get to choose your family;
  • You are the only one at the class reunion who looks better than you did in high school;
  • Your relationship tends naturally to be one of equals. It won’t automatically fall into tired old stereotype gender roles. You get to make up the rules about everything to suit yourselves.

Could do without:
  • Non-functional gaydar;
  • Living single in a relationship-minded heteronormative world;
  • Society ignoring your voice for freedom and equality;
  • Everyone thinks that the only thing in your mind is sex;
  • Far-right evangelicals telling the world that you cannot be gay and a Christian;
  • People think your relationships aren't real or won't last.
